Transportation by Ship – a clear ecological and economic advantage
Ship transports offer far-reaching advantages over conventional transport routes such as road and rail. Heavy and project cargo in particular can be transported more easily and cost-effectively via inland waterways. Large quantities of goods and bulky items can be transported much more easily and efficiently than by road. For example, an inland waterway vessel can transport an average of approx. 1,500 tons, which is roughly equivalent to the loading capacity of approx. 50 railroad cars or approx. 60 trucks.
The ecological and economic advantage can be clearly derived from this. Transporting goods is cheaper and more environmentally friendly on inland waterway vessels. The inland vessel thus occupies a key position in the energy turnaround to make transport chains greener. The CO2 emissions of a truck are around 4 times higher than those of an inland vessel (source: German Federal Environment Agency). For a transport volume of 1,500 tons, this results in a saving of 750 l of diesel per 100km. Thus, inland navigation can make a significant contribution to achieving the EU’s climate targets.
The advantages over road and rail transport
Environmental compatibility
Compared to trucks and trains, inland waterway vessels produce fewer CO2 emissions per ton of transported goods when unloaded. In addition, inland waterway vessels are able to transport large quantities of goods at once, which helps to reduce traffic congestion on roads and railways.
Efficiency.
Efficiency
On average, inland vessels have lower transport costs per ton than trucks and trains. This is because barges have greater capacity and can therefore transport more tonnages at once. Barges are also able to serve several ports and transshipment points in a single transport, resulting in faster logistics handling.
Flexibility
Inland vessels can navigate almost all inland waterways in Europe. The fleet of BAYERISCHER LLOYD AG offers different sizes of motor cargo vessels, which means that every customer request can be flexibly met. Especially for bulk cargoes, and bulky heavy cargoes/project cargoes, which are hardly manageable for road or rail, inland shipping offers flexible solutions. This gives our partners more options when choosing the optimal transport route. Inland vessels are generally less susceptible to traffic congestion and delays than trucks and trains.
Overall, the inland waterway vessel can be considered the most environmentally friendly means of transport in the area of bulk and heavy cargo. In addition, it offers a cost-effective, efficient, flexible and reliable option for transporting large volumes of goods in Europe.
